As we all know there are various easy and simple software available by which we can create a bootable pen drive easily. Some of the software that widely used are Win 32 Disk Imager, Rufus, UNetBootin, etc. But why you want a software when you can do the same work without any software by just typing some simple commands, here we are going to tell you how you can create a bootable pen drive using cmd(windows command prompt) in just 5 min.
Steps to Create Bootable Pendrive using CMD
CMD comes with every windows computer preinstalled, so you would not have to purchase any new package or software to make your pen drive bootable. It is a bit lengthy process but it traditional method and always works, in fact, these all software do the same process in the background which we are going to do:
Step 1: First Run cmd(Command Prompt) as Administrator. (This is an important step because you are going to edit disks which require admin privileges without the permission you cant do this process)There are several ways to open a command prompt with admin rights:
i) Press Windows + X and select Command Prompt(Admin).
ii) Open start menu, click on search and type cmd, right click and click run as administrator.
Step 2: Now connect your pen drive to your computer after that go to step 3.
Step 3: In CMD Type disk part and press enter. (This will open the windows inbuilt disk part utility which is used to manage the storage on your windows computer)
Step 4: Now Type list disk and press enter. This will list all the storage disk available on your computer.
Step 5: From here Choose your pen drive. For that type select disk 1 and press enter. (Here we are using disk 1. On your computer it may differ so choose wisely)
Step 6: Now type clean and press enter. This command will erase all data from your pen drive.
Step 7: Now type create partition primary and press enter.
Step 8: Now type select partition 1 and press enter. This will choose the partition we just created as you can see in the image down blow.
Step 9: Now type format=fs NTFS quick and hit enter. This will perform a quick format with the NTFS file system (Windows use the NTFS file system for storage) you can also use fat32.
Step 10: Now type active and hit enter. This command will mark your primary partition as active.
Step 11: Now type exit and press enter to exit disk part and then close the command prompt or you can type exit again.
Step 12: Now copy all the data from Windows installation disk or your windows iso to your pen drive.
Step 13: Now your pen drive is bootable having desired windows installation. just insert it and boot from this pen drive.
